Spend the first three days exploring the serene and bird-rich Rugezi Swamp, a Ramsar-listed wetland teeming with biodiversity. Then, continue to the stunning twin lakes—Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo—where you’ll enjoy scenic boat rides, cultural encounters, and picturesque hikes. Itinerary

Day 1:
Arrival and Exploration of Rugezi Swamp

Your journey begins with a scenic drive to Rugezi Swamp, a protected wetland known for its incredible biodiversity. Upon arrival, embark on a guided nature walk, where you’ll spot various bird species, including the endangered Grauer’s swamp warbler and the majestic grey crowned crane. In the afternoon, enjoy a picnic by the swamp before settling into a nearby eco-lodge for the night.

Day 2:
Birdwatching and Canoeing at Rugezi Swamp

Rise early for a thrilling birdwatching expedition, as the swamp comes alive with the sounds of different bird species. With the help of an expert guide, observe rare and migratory birds in their natural habitat. Later, take a canoe ride through the swamp’s channels, getting a closer view of the lush vegetation and aquatic life. Spend the evening unwinding at your lodge, enjoying the peaceful sounds of nature.

Day 3:
Nature Walks and Community Interaction

On your final day at Rugezi Swamp, embark on a guided nature walk through the surrounding wetlands and grasslands. Along the way, learn about the swamp’s ecological importance and conservation efforts. In the afternoon, visit a nearby local community to experience Rwandan rural life, traditions, and crafts. Later, transfer to your lodge near Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo in preparation for the next phase of your adventure.

Day 4:
Arrival and Exploration of Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo

After breakfast, start your journey towards the breathtaking twin lakes, Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo. Upon arrival, take in the stunning views of the lakes surrounded by rolling hills and the towering Virunga Mountains. Spend the afternoon relaxing by the lakeshore or taking a short nature walk around the area. In the evening, enjoy a delicious lakeside dinner at your lodge.

Day 5:
Boat Ride and Fishing Experience

Today, embark on a scenic boat ride across the twin lakes, where you’ll witness stunning reflections of the Virunga volcanoes on the water. Visit some of the small islands scattered across the lakes, including one inhabited by local fishermen. Get a chance to join them in a traditional fishing experience, learning their techniques and cultural significance. Later, return to the lodge for a relaxing evening.

Day 6:
Hiking and Return to Kigali

On your final day, take a guided hike along the hills surrounding the lakes, offering panoramic views of the twin lakes and distant volcanoes. Stop at a local village to interact with the community and learn about their way of life. After lunch, begin your return journey to Kigali, concluding your unforgettable 6-day safari through Rwanda’s wetlands and lakes.
