Makgadikgadi Pans National Park

The Magic of Silence, Salt, and Stars.

Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, located in northeastern Botswana, is one of the world’s largest salt flats and a striking natural wonder. Covering over 12,000 square kilometers, this vast and surreal landscape was once an ancient super lake but has since transformed into shimmering salt flats interspersed with grassy plains and palm islands. Despite its arid appearance, Makgadikgadi is home to incredible seasonal wildlife spectacles and offers visitors a chance to experience a uniquely tranquil and otherworldly environment. During the rainy season, the pans come to life, attracting thousands of migratory zebras and wildebeests, along with predators like lions, cheetahs, and hyenas. The area also hosts one of Africa’s most significant flamingo breeding events when water fills the pans. Meerkats, gemsbok, and brown hyenas are among the year-round wildlife residents. Visitors can enjoy activities such as quad biking across the pans, guided nature walks with San Bushmen, and game drives to witness seasonal wildlife migrations. The park’s dramatic contrasts between the dry, shimmering pans and lush, green rainy-season landscapes make it a must-see destination.
